Fabrizio Romano’s ‘here we go’ could finally pave the way for Bryan Mbeumo’s move to Manchester United — but there’s a complication.
Manchester United have been actively pursuing Brentford’s Cameroonian winger, Bryan Mbeumo. Although they’ve won over the player himself, negotiations with Brentford have proven difficult, with the London club rejecting multiple bids.
However, as reported last week, United could be in for a timely boost in their chase for Mbeumo. Newcastle have launched a bid for former United winger Anthony Elanga, who impressed last season at Nottingham Forest.
Could this aid United’s pursuit of Mbeumo?
On Monday night, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Elanga’s transfer to Newcastle is nearly done, using his signature “here we go.” According to the journalist, the two clubs have agreed on a £55 million deal, and Elanga has also agreed to personal terms with the Magpies.
United are set to benefit financially from this move, receiving about £8 million due to a 15% sell-on clause included when they sold Elanga to Forest in 2023.
While this unexpected cash injection could help United close the financial gap in their bid for Mbeumo, the Elanga deal may also backfire.
Why Elanga’s transfer might complicate things for United
According to The i journalist Mark Douglas, Brentford now believe Mbeumo should command a higher transfer fee, given that Elanga is moving for £55 million and Joao Pedro recently joined Chelsea from Brighton for £60 million.
Even though both Elanga and Pedro had strong seasons, Brentford see Mbeumo as a standout performer with significantly better numbers.
Player | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
---|---|---|---|
Bryan Mbeumo | 42 | 20 | 9 |
Anthony Elanga | 43 | 6 | 12 |
Joao Pedro | 31 | 10 | 7 |
As a result, United may need to remain patient. The silver lining is that Mbeumo prefers a move to Old Trafford, having turned down interest from other clubs.
