DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers have placed utility player Matt Vierling back on the injured list, just four days after he was reactivated. Vierling had only recently returned to action following a long recovery.
The 27-year-old had missed three months due to a strained rotator cuff. However, the team announced he is now dealing with inflammation in his right shoulder, forcing him to sit out once again.
Vierling’s brief return was hoped to provide depth and flexibility to the Tigers’ lineup, but this latest setback is a significant blow for both him and the team. The nature of the inflammation and the expected length of his absence have not yet been detailed.
To address the roster gap, the Tigers reinstated Wenceel Pérez from the 60-day injured list. Pérez had been sidelined since the end of spring training due to lower back inflammation.
Pérez is set to start in center field Tuesday night as the Tigers face the San Francisco Giants. The team hopes his return will bring a spark to the lineup during a crucial stretch of the season.
