Just in: Ex-Tigers Standout Makes Unexpected Comeback with 1-Day Coaching Deal

Brandon Inge Night Coming to Kalamazoo

The Kalamazoo Growlers, a founding team in the Northwoods League, have unveiled a special event: Brandon Inge Night, set for Thursday, July 10 at Homer Stryker Field.

Former Detroit Tigers All-Star and fan favorite Brandon Inge will take on multiple roles during the evening. Inge will serve as the team’s honorary coach, setting the lineup, manning first base, and helping prepare the Growlers as they face their regional rivals, the Battle Creek Battle Jacks.

This one-time coaching appearance is more than just a fun gimmick—it honors Inge’s distinguished baseball career and deep ties to Michigan. According to team owner Brian Colopy, the event is meant to rekindle local enthusiasm, fuel old rivalries, and bring a touch of the 2006 Tigers’ spirit to Kalamazoo.

Inge’s name was at the top of fans’ wish lists for a guest appearance.

“I’m honestly overwhelmed and incredibly grateful,” Inge shared. “Kalamazoo, I’m excited to coach the Growlers—see you at the ballpark.”

Remembering Brandon Inge’s Career

Detroit sports fans still hold Brandon Inge in high regard. Over a 13-year MLB career, he gained a reputation for being a versatile player, appearing at every position except pitcher. Known for his hustle and strong defense, Inge transitioned from catcher to one of the league’s most dependable third basemen.

Notable highlights include his selection to the 2009 MLB All-Star Game, competing in that year’s Home Run Derby, and his crucial part in the Tigers’ 2006 World Series run—one of the team’s most memorable seasons since their 1984 title. In total, Inge played over 1,500 games and collected more than 1,100 hits.

Brandon Inge's time in Detroit reaches its end - Bless You Boys

Detroit fans appreciated his no-nonsense, hard-working approach to the game. Now, Kalamazoo fans will get the chance to reconnect with him—not as a player, but as a mentor and coach to aspiring collegiate athletes.

Adding a personal twist to the story: Brandon Inge’s son, Tyler, is continuing the family tradition. A current infielder at the University of Michigan, Tyler debuted on February 16, 2025, proudly wearing number 15—the same number his father wore with the Tigers. His steady development has started drawing attention from scouts and generating buzz in college baseball circles.

A Community-Focused Celebration

Leading up to the July 10 game, the Growlers will host an online auction offering signed memorabilia, including bats, jerseys, hats, and baseballs. All proceeds will benefit the Jr. Growlers Baseball Academy, a youth development program for players aged 8 to 18. The initiative is aimed at helping young athletes enhance their baseball skills and knowledge.

Fans attending the event can expect several opportunities to meet Inge, including a pre-game autograph session and photo opportunities. He’ll also remain available during the evening to interact with fans, and a special postgame meet-and-greet will let supporters hear stories and share in the experience.

A Complex Tigers Legacy

Inge remains a polarizing figure in Detroit Tigers history. To some, he epitomized the gritty, blue-collar attitude of the early 2000s Tigers—a player who battled through injuries, provided reliable defense, and was central to the team’s resurgence. His contributions during the 2006 World Series run remain a cherished memory for many.

However, other fans were frustrated by Inge’s inconsistency at the plate in later years. Critics pointed to his offensive struggles and vocal dissatisfaction when his role shifted as the Tigers added more powerful hitters. For them, his departure in 2012 marked the end of a period filled with both promise and unmet expectations.

That dual legacy adds depth to his return. Brandon Inge Night will be a nostalgic celebration for some and a curiosity for others. But whether admired or debated, Inge’s place in Tigers history is undeniable—and his name still sparks conversation more than a decade after his last game in Detroit.
