Just In: Rangers Reportedly Exploring Trade Options for K’Andre Miller, per NHL Insider

One of the biggest decisions the New York Rangers face this offseason revolves around K’Andre Miller. The 25-year-old defenseman, a restricted free agent with arbitration rights, is due for a substantial raise. The Rangers must decide whether to re-sign him or explore a trade, which could bring a strong return given his talent—despite inconsistent performance over five NHL seasons.

The core question is whether the Rangers view Miller as a long-term piece of their future or if they’ve lost trust in him due to his erratic play. Either way, the organization appears to be taking a smart approach by evaluating his trade value with two years remaining before he hits unrestricted free agency.

“It’s not a done deal, but they are testing the waters,” reported NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on the latest 32 Thoughts podcast. “They want to see what’s out there. Miller’s name is definitely in circulation.”

Some might interpret this as a strong sign that Miller is on the trade block, but that’s not necessarily the case. General Manager Chris Drury is simply doing his due diligence by gauging interest around the league, even if he ends up keeping Miller.

If the Rangers opt to re-sign Miller, they have two main paths: a short-term, two-year bridge deal that would maintain flexibility but push him directly toward free agency in 2027, or a long-term commitment—potentially 5-7 years—at a higher annual cap hit than his previous $3.872 million. The latter option carries more risk due to Miller’s inconsistency, but it could pay off significantly if he reaches his full potential, possibly solidifying a top-pairing role alongside Adam Fox.

The Rangers know Miller better than anyone—they drafted him 22nd overall in 2018, developed him, and have watched him evolve since debuting in 2021. They’re well aware of both his impressive physical tools and the lapses in judgment that plague his game.

Head coach Mike Sullivan’s input will also be crucial. He has firsthand experience coaching against Miller, particularly during the 2022 playoffs when the Rangers edged out his former team, the Penguins, in a seven-game series. Sullivan saw Miller used in key shutdown roles, including against stars like Sidney Crosby.

Ultimately, the Rangers are keeping all doors open, which is the right move. Whether they decide to trade or retain Miller, they’re doing their homework—and that’s exactly what a smart front office should do in a pivotal offseason.
